I heard a funny thing in the office today…..

Don’t remember exactly what the conversation was about, but the person said…"Yeah, this was due to something happening way back in the 90s…."

WAY BACK in the 90s???  I can think WAY BACK to the 70s, *maybe* way back to the 80s….the 90s were not WAY BACK.  Just BACK; or IN.
I don’t think it has to do with how old someone is; it has to do with how YOUNG someone is.

80s music is CLASSIC.  90s music is just DATED.
70s clothes are DATED.  90s clothes are still IN STYLE.

There can be no nostalgia about the 90s….none.  Babies born in 1990 are still in High School, barely old enough to drive.

WAY BACK in the 90s…..<shaking my head>

First Week in the books

I arrived in the Seattle area on Sunday night.  Picked up my bags from baggage claim and then went to pick up the car.  Since I wasn’t familiar with the area, I asked for a GPS unit.  "Sorry, the type of rental you have doesnt allow changes."  Fine, I’ll pay for it out of pocket.  "I’m sorry, you can’t"  "What??"  Nevermind, I get headaches from dealing with drones who don’t get it.

I get to my corporate apt and it’s not bad.  Better than most hotels I’ve stayed in as far as amenities are concerned.  Cable TV, internet access, dishwasher, frig, microwave, etc.  This isn’t half bad.

New Employee Orientation (NEO) was fun.  It seemed to drag the second day after the Legal Team did their part.  Got my ID (First horrible pic I’ve taken for a namebadge) and I was off to meet my manager.  What ensued immediately following made me feel like I was swimming in the Pacific with no life preserver.  This all happened last week, so I’m forgetting a lot, but the overall feeling is that this will be a lot of fun.

I am now on the plane back to Phoenix. I am in Chicago now and arrived a few hours ago from Brazil. I left at 4:30pm PHX time YESTERDAY. I will go straight to work from the airport. I will probably crash HARD tonight.

Brazil trip…observations and what I learned

Things that I ‘ve learned over the past three days being in Brazil:

1) People are much more conservative in their dress.  Just to go to lunch men wear jackets.  Males typically do not wear jeans.  Women typically have long hair past their shoulders.

2) Compared to most countries in Europe, very few people speak English.

3) They LOVE to EAT here….there is a passion about the food that is just incredible.  I’ve never eaten so much and liked it.

4) This is the biggest city I’ve ever seen.  NYC has a little of 8 million in the city proper.  São Paulo has over 10 in the city proper. NYC has 830 sq km of area.  SP has over 1500!!!

5)  That whole thing about the water swirling the opposite direction because its south of the equator….that’s BUNK; I tried it.

They made me an offer I couldn’t refuse….

Life is funny.

What happens when the dog that chases the car finally catches it?  then what?

Well Microsoft  let me catch them and now what?  Can’t play hard to get, I was chasing *them*…well…almost:

I was contacted by MS based on a referral by an MS employee.  I had no idea this happened.  When I found out the job required a relocation, I was almost immediately against it.

Then I interviewed.

This position was made for me.  THEN they throw money at me…..I love Arizona…..then they throw some EXTRA stuff……Seattle??….Then they throw MORE stuff….<sigh> ….OK, you got me.

My first day is May 21.  Now for the tough part.  Parting ways with the absolute best boss I’ve EVER had.

Life is funny.  So why am I not laughing?

An OOPS moment

I had called the vendor Tech support line to get some guidance on why the app was failing. We go into a WebEx session so that I may show him what is happening. I share my desktop and we are off to the races.

My colleague then shoots me an IM and says, "do they have any idea why they suck?" I had to click multiple times because they had control of the mouse and tried to close the window before it registered in the minds of the vendor….did they see it? they’re awfully quiet on the other end right now….
